THE ARTIST

The designs of Albert Christoph Reck are, among others, inspired by cave paintings of the San. A people that lived in Southern Africa around 10,000 years ago. Other sources of inspiration are the overwhelming flora and fauna of Africa, as well as contemporary art

Albert Christoph Reck
1922 A.C.Reck , born 1922 in Krappitz, Upper Silesia (previously German now Polish). He left school for sea in 1938 on a merchant shipping line. It was taken over by the navy in 1940 into torpedo boats. He became a navigation instructor at Eckernförde in 1942. Was taken prisoner of war 1945. In 1946 he returned to school to complete matric in Hannover. Northern Germany 1947, he became a scholar of the artist and poet Hans Holtdorf in Bockholmwik.

1952 Freelance artist in Hamburg. Studio in Hamburg, Reeperbahn
1954 Married Maria-Louise Schlüter, she too a pupil of A.Mahlau at that time.
1956 Lichtwark Bursary of the Free and Hanse Town Hamburg
1958 Building a house and studio in Henstedt-Rhen at the source of the river Alster.
Bursary of the "Lichtwark Preis" of the Free and Hanse Town Hamburg - Stipendium of the "Kunstkreis im Bundesverband der deutsche Industrie"
1962 Trip with a cargo  boat round Africa as a bursary

1963 Emmigration to Johannesburg, S.A., with the whole family ; wife and six children
1965-1968 Lecturer at the School of Arts in Johannesburg and the German School Johannesburg.

1970-1973 Lecturer at the Fachhochschule für Padagogic in Hamburg
1972 Bought a wooden pilot boat from Rostock, Germany, and revived it into a gaff cutter
1976 Sailing from Kiel , Germany,with the family on the reconditioned gaff cutter "Inopoleku"  to Natal, S.A.
1977 Founding a weaving workshop "Phumalanga Swazihand - Swaziland Tapestries" in the Ezulwini Valley in Swaziland.
1979 Exhibition in the Landesbank Kiel with paintings and tapestries Exhibition at the Arts Association in Durban, S.A.
1982 Exhibition of drawings, paintings and tapestries in the Museum of Schleswig Holstein, Germany
1984 opening "Endlotane Studios" on the Ngwenya mountains, teaching young Africans.
1985 Exhibition of drawings and paintings at "Galerie Semler" in Kiel, Germany

1986-1988 The largest tapestry project in the world, woven by the Swaziland Tapestry workshop (670sq.m.) for Tampa International Airport, Florida, USA
