Quarrel at the Border
Actually it always starts with the passports, the quarrels. Because there are two sides as everybody knows. This side fixes a big stamp into the last page, the other side quarrels about the date and finds no space for to glue their official paper under the stamp of the last side of the passport. Suddenly you may find yourself sitting between the chairs, and on top standing between two border posts, you find yourself in big trouble and the quarrel overpowers you. But what is a border? Where does it start and does it end; a border is something in-between. You may stand between Ngwenya and the Oshoek border post. (History tells us, this is quasi a fancy border, because it was dictated by foot and mouth decease.) Standing in-between, you are not existing, you may become a spirit, you are dematerialized. Then the officials of both sides start to treat you as nobody. And now, being nobody, you are hanging in the air like a punching bag, The poor creature serves as a welcome training opportunity for the officials. This is the moment, when the real quarrel starts to overpower the unaware commuter. The bold, black lines I use in the picture, are similar to a border line. They try to express something in-between. Our weavers were fascinated by the bold, black lines and the bright, transparent strokes of the crayons. They chose the picture as a cartoon. For the rough white background, in cotton yarns and sporadically thick cotton rope were used. With it they produced an interestingly textured background. The bold black lines were woven out of black, light absorbing wool. For the transparent crayon strokes they chose fine mercerized cotton, acrylic and handspun mohair threads. Out of the hands of this weaver an extraordinary tapestry appeared.
