The motives
for this
tapestry is taken from a cave in east Griqualand, one of the latest cave paintings
of south Africa, the painting is thought to date from 1850 - 1870 when the
Bushman, whose ancient hunting grounds were now occupied by black and white
farmers, resorted to hunting the horses and cattle of the usurpers. This raid
is not successful. Farmers on horseback are perusing the hunters, gunpowder
ignites on flash-pans and muzzleloaders roar. In this tapestry the San hunters
can clearly be seen running from the chasing party on horseback, in the top
right hand corner a San spirit Beings is seen watching the spectacle.
This tapestry is woven out of handspun-mohair, in an edition of 20 only.
Each tapestry is woven by one weaver who though her individual technique
makes it a unique piece of art.
