If
like me, you enjoy good food eaten in agreeable company, in pleasant
surroundings, the recently opened Pinnacle Restaurant & Gallery
in Ngwenya is probably just what the doctor ordered. With the
chronic shortage of venues for a decent family meal in our fair
land, the Pinnacle is going to be a firm favourite with me and
my tribe. I suspect this is the reason why I was invited in the
first place
.. to sing its praises. Not a difficult task
when you consider the amount of time and effort invested by co-owners
Bernhard Valentin and Steve Putini. Before I tell you any more
about the Pinnacle Restaurant & Beer Garden, for those of you
who don`t know, Ngwenya is about 15 km`s from Mbabane on the
road to the Oshoek /Ngwenya border post. The restaurant is on
the righthand side, you turn off as if you`re going to Ngwenya
Glass then carry on to the top of the hill, and they`re sharing
the magnificent view and a portion of the complex with Endlotane
Studios. A bit more about the Studios later on. Anyway you know
where they are now. Back to the food! There are two reasons why
I love the food here, it`s simple and there`s a lot of it. The
main course, and it`s the only one, is a generous portion of
flame-grilled ribs, baked potato and a salad. Dessert is a selection
of freshly baked cakes and pastries with coffee or tea. Their
banana loaf, fellow epicureans, is out of this world! But don`t
take my word for it, taste for youself. (I know this sounds like
an advertisement, but honestly, I`m just repeating what my stomach
went through.) There`s a breakfast thing they also do, but since
I didn`t eat it, I can`t comment. What I can tell you about is
the bar. A nicer, cosier bar you will not find. Seating about
six (including myself) , this is a place for serious discussion,
between men, of important issues in the world today. Unfortunately
my beautiful wife, God bless her, was outside bonding with our
two terrors, and thus unable to contribute in our deliberations. |

That`s
the other wonderful thing. There`s a place for the kids to run
around, and you can keep an eye on them from inside, if you don`t
have a wife or something to send out with them. For a married
man who enjoys serious discussions, a playground in the right
place is a great convenience. You will have certainly noticed
by now that I am a person of great intelligence and refinement,
and as such I have a great love for the arts, performing and
otherwise. The Pinnacle is unique I believe, in that it offers
the only `interactive gourmet/art experience` in Swaziland. Works
of resident, renowned artist Albert Christoph Reck, are currently
on display in the restaurant. These works are all on sale and
will be rotated on a weekly basis. Co-owner Putini says this
is an attempt to promote art in general and local artists in
particular. He also mentioned the fact that they share premises
with Endlotane Studios, who as well as A.C. Reck and his creations,
also weave and sell tapestries. Putini convinced me at least
that this combination of the aesthetically pleasing with their
gastronomical delights is the only way to true physical and spiritual
contentment. I for one was certainly replete in both areas. Even
if you`re only vegetarian, the art and tapestries alone are worth
a visit. And remember if all else fails, there`s always the bar.I
had a chat with the other half of the Pinnacle partnership, Bernhard
Valentin, and he has some interesting plans for a bit later on
in the year. There`s a small library and reading room that`s
being worked on next door. He also talked of a poetry reading
evening in the near future, and of course the beer garden that`s
just about ready
I`m not going to tell you any more.
I think I`ve said enough for my one free meal and coffee. Come
and see for yourself, it`s open all week long from 9.00 in the
morning till late at night, and if you `re looking for me, I`m
in the bar. Cheers!
